Jun Hoong satisfied

THERE was no gold this time but diver Cheong Jun Hoong is still satisfied with her bronze medal finish in the Malaysian leg of the World Grand Prix yesterday.

Jun Hoong, who came out tops in the women’s 3m springboard final at the Singapore leg last week, settled for third place at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil with a score of 339.00.

Last week’s silver medallist Wang Han of China won gold with a score of 362.50 while her compatriot Liu Huixia (351.60) took silver.

Another Malaysian, Wendy Ng Yan Yee (309.70) was fourth.

“Last week was my best performance but I also know the China divers were not at their best.

“They were, however, very good today (yesterday) and I’m quite satisfied to still be on the podium,” said Jun Hoong, who added that she could still improve on her technique consistency.

“I will be having a short break after this and perhaps go off for training camps at the beginning of next year to prepare for the Sea Games (Singapore) and World Championships.”

Meanwhile, Ooi Tze Liang added two more silver to his collection, one from the men’s 3m springboard synchronised with Ahmad Amsyar Azman, and then in the 10m platform synchronised with Chew Yiwei.

In the 3m springboard, Tze Liang-Amsyar scored 414.45 to finish behind China’s Li Shixin-He Chao (441.54), while Colombia’s Sebastian Morales-Sebastian Villa (399.87) settled for bronze.

In the 10m platform, Tze Liang-Yiwei scored 386.55, finishing behind China’s Zhang Yanquan-Chen Aisen (474.30) while the United States’ Zach Cooper-Tanner Wilfong (348.57) was third.

“I am a little tired because I have been competing in five events including the preliminary rounds but I think my performance is still okay,” said Tze Liang.

His 10m platform partner Yiwei, was however a little disappointed to be have not hit the 400 mark target.

“I think my synchronisation with Tze Liang is good, but individually I slacked a little in my entry and I am disappointed that we did not hit our 400 mark target,” said Yiwei, who will compete in the 10m platform individual final today.
