Man shot dead during botched robbery attempt

KUALA LUMPUR: Police shot dead a man armed with a pistol when he was robbing a cyber cafe in Taman Fadason in Jinjang, here, about 2.30pm today.

The deceased, later identified as a 22-year-old Indonesian man, brandished a gun upon entering the premises at Taman Fadason's business centre shortly before a team of policemen confronted him.

Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner R. Munusamy said the plainclothed policemen had been monitoring the area since morning after receiving information on a man behaving suspiciously there.

"Earlier in the morning, a team of policemen who were patrolling the area noticed a man on motorcycle going around the business centres in suspicious manner.

"Following the information, a team from the district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department was sent to conduct surveillance, " he said, adding that the cyber cafe had also been robbed four days ago.

Munusamy said the team then saw the suspect, who was wearing a helmet with ski mask underneath it, entering the cyber cafe about 2.30pm.

When the policemen followed suit and identified themselves to the man, who was looting cash from the cyber cafe's cash register, they saw the suspect was already holding a pistol.

Police then fired three shots, which hit the suspect's body.

He died on the spot.

Police also seized a motorcycle that the suspect rode to the scene.
