Team confident despite Incheon failure

MALAYSIA are aiming to make amends for their poor outing at the recent Incheon Asian Games with a strong showing in the season opening leg of the ISTAF SuperSeries which starts in Myanmar today.

Seeded second, the sepaktakraw team are confident of notching a win against Japan in their opening Group A match at the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium.

The team only managed bronze in both the regu and team events in Incheon earlier this month in what was the nation’s worst ever performance in the history of the Asian Games.

They had fared marginally better in the SuperSeries last season, finishing runners-up in three legs as well as the grand finals.

Coach Najib Iman is fielding an experienced side comprising players who played in previous SuperSeries tournaments, the Asian Games and the 2013 Sea Games.

“They (players) have promised to prove all their detractors wrong and regain the trust of our sepaktakraw fans,” said Najib.

Other Group A matches today will see Asian Games silver medallists South Korea facing Singapore. In Group B, Myanmar take on China while Asian Games gold medallists Thailand play Indonesia.
