Draft of proposed amendments to Trade Union Act to be reviewed

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will review the draft of the proposed amendments to the Trade Unions Act 1959 before its tabling in Parliament to ensure its relevance with current situation, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abdul Muttalib said this was to ensure the proposed amendments took into account the proposed amendments to the Industrial Relations Act, scheduled to be tabled soon, as well as issues raised in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

“The ministry will review the draft (of the proposed amendments to the Trade Unions Act) to ensure it is in line with the proposed amendments to the Industrial Relations Act, as well as in tandem with the TPPA requirements and relevant with current situation.

The proposed amendments, when finalised, will be posted on the website to obtain feedbacks before they are tabled to the trade unions and employers, and then to Parliament,” he said during question time in Parliament today.

He was responding to a question from Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR-Kuala Langat) on measures by the government to improve the Trade Unions Act.

Ismail said discussions were held to study the provisions in the law before the proposed amendments were made. - BERNAMA
