Notes on self-acceptance

THIS young artiste may not have the typical starlet look but she has been hitting the right notes with her big bobbing debut single, All About The Bass.

The melodic ditty has already peaked at the No. 1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as on other charts around the world, which include the UK and Australia.

Sung and co-composed by Meghan Elizabeth Trainor from Nantucket, Massachusetts, All About The Bass represents the cheery 20-year-old’s major label release. The song has a positive vibe that promotes body acceptance, by celebrating men and women of all shapes and sizes.

Trainor has said in interviews that she wrote the song because she too struggles with self-acceptance and stresses that she did not set out to write a feminist anthem but send out a universal message for all to appreciate what we each have.

Released in June, the winning tune, with its funky and adorable music video was followed by another single, Lips Are Movin.

All About The Bass was later included in her four-song EP, Title, that dropped in last September.

The songs are a teaser for her third studio album, also named Title, which is set to be released in early January.

Trainor, whose material straddles the genres of pop, doo-wop and blue-eyed soul, hails from a musical family. Dabbling in songwriting and songs that she produced on her computer since the age of 11, Trainor was later signed to a record label by the time she turned 18. A talented young artiste, she also plays the piano and ukulele, and has written songs for a number of other young acts, including Rascal Flatts, R5 and Sabrina Carpenter.

In 2011 she wrote and self-released two albums, I’ll Sing With You and Only 17.
