Woman charged with attempts to join IS

SEPANG: An assistant credit controller was charged at the Sessions Court here with attempting to provide support to the terrorist Islamic State (IS) group three weeks ago.

Ummi Kalsom Bahak was accused of trying to join IS by attempting to board an Istanbul-bound AirAsia flight at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA 2) here to marry an IS member, Aqif Huessin Rahaizat and becoming a member of the group.

She allegedly committed the offence at the Immigration counter of KLIA’s Departure Hall at 5.20am on Oct 5.

Ummi nodded her head as a sign she understood the charge that was read to her before Sessions Court judge Aizatul Akmal Maharani.

However, no plea was recorded.

The 25-year-old woman was also charged with an alternative charge of trying to benefit IS by taking the same flight to enter Syria to get married with Aqif.

She was alleged to have committed the offence at the same place and time.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin urged the court to deny the accused bail, as whoever charged under Section 13(1) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 is not eligible for bail.

He also applied for the case to be transferred to the High Court.

Aizatul Akmal did not grant the accused bail and fixed Nov 20 for mention to transfer the case to the High Court.

Ummi was unrepresented.
