Marginal improvement

DANNY Chia was still far from his best but showed signs of improvement on another slow day for the Malaysian duo at the CIMB Classic yesterday.

Danny, who shot three-over 75 on Thursday, managed his first birdie of the tournament on the 10th hole yesterday but bogeyed the third, 11th and 12th at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. He finished the day joint 69th on a two-day of five-over 149

The 41-year-old, who suffered a career threatening neck injury last year, said he is starting to feel more comfortable competing despite still feeling the effects of his injury.

“The first day (Thursday) I spent pretty much the whole day trying to adjust my swing and experimenting with all kinds of stuff on the golf club but it still didn’t work. Today (yesterday) I told myself to just relax and go and play,” said Danny, who is making his third appearance at the competition.

“Actually I was quite pleased with the back nine, even though the score doesn’t tell. I was starting to feel more comfortable with my swing. It was just that the putts were still not dropping. At least I feel good for the next two days.

“All I can do is just keep improving. I cannot go backwards anymore as I am pretty much at the bottom.”

Nicholas Fung ended the round in joint-59th, after also carding two-over 74 for a two-day four-over 148.

“I did well on the fairways and greens but my putting was so bad,” said the 24-year-old.

“I am not going to do any practice putts after this. The more I practice, the more confused I get, so I’m just going to take it easy tonight, come back tomorrow and just concentrate on getting the basics right.”
