Kedah Landspout: Cleaning works began in affected areas

ALOR STAR: As the dusts from the landspout incident which left more than 72 houses and a government clinic damaged in Mergong and Gunung Keriang settled, the residents began works to clean up the mess at their respective home.

The victims were seen salvaging clothes, furniture and belongings that were soaked by the rain that followed the fierce storm that occurred at 4.50pm yesterday.

Helps are pouring in for the victims while government agencies and volunteer bodies resumed their service in lending hands to ease the affected residents’ burden.

A revisit to the Kampung Sungai Baru today showed that some 20 homes were damaged in yesterday evening disaster, with at least five houses were severely damaged.

Rela members and Civil Defence Department personnel were seen helping with pruning the trees and branches that looked precarious.

Kuala Kedah UMNO division head Datuk Abdullah Hasnan Kamaruddin who visited the area presented RM100 cash aid to each of the affected families.

It was the same scenario in Mergong area, as the affected families began the daunting cleaning up duty.

Meanwhile, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism deputy minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said he would discuss with the relevant agencies to expedite the disaster-related assistance from the state government.

Bashah, who is also Bakar Bata assemblyman also distributed cash aid and essential items from the state government to the victims.

"The relevant agencies had started the damage assessment process and we will look into ways to expedite the process to extend further help for the victims," he said.
