Kangar council to recycle bio-solids, bio-effluents

KANGAR: The Kangar Municipal Council recently inked an agreement with Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) to implement a water recycling treatment project, which would be used for various purposes, except drinking.

The project would involve the treatment of bio-solids and bio-effluents which can be used for watering and fertilising landscapes in Kangar, Arau and Kuala Perlis.

IWK chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Din said the use of bio-solids and bio-effluents would help promote water conservation and minimise the usage of treated water for city landscape.

“Prior to this, Alor Star City Council and Port Dickson Municipal Council had implemented similar project.

“Based on their feedback, the project has helped them save water consumption by up to 30 per cent annually,” he said in a press conference after signing the agreement.

Present were state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Mat Hassan, council president Ahmad Hussin and its secretary Suhaimi A. Majid.

Kadir added that based on research, the recycling of bio-solids and bio-effluents benefited landscaped plants because of their high quality nutrients.

Suhaimi said the council spent between RM100,000 and RM200,000 a year for watering and fertilising the landscapes.

“We can save on maintenance costs and at the same time promote green technology by implementing this project,” he said. By Zahratulhayat Mat Arif
