Spirit of the Big Apple

In an apt move, jewellery giant Tiffany & Co pays tribute to the energy of New York, writes Kasmiah Mustapha

NEW York is often described as the world’s greatest city Jewellery house Tiffany & Co shares this view through its latest collection, Tiffany T.

Created by its newly appointed design director, Francesca Amfitheatrof, the collection reflects the city — its power, energy and daring.

Amfitheatrof has dedicated her creations to also the global travellers who gravitate towards art and culture which New York is famous for.

“I wanted to create a symbol for modern life and the relentless energy that flows through New York and drives art and culture around the world. This is just the beginning of what I hope to accomplish. The designs pay tribute to the Tiffany name but there is also a verticality and intensity that I associate with the energy and optimism of New York,” she says.

“There is a lot of New York in Tiffany T. This is a place of courage and reinvention that constantly sparks creativity.”

WORLD INFLUENCE

A trained jeweller and silversmith, Amfitheatrof’s work is also influenced by her life in Asia, Europe and Russia and her travels.

“While I was designing Tiffany T, I had these global citizens in my mind. They are highly creative people, they exist in every great city in the world. The strength of Tiffany T appeals to these explorers, because it enhances an already vibrant personality rather than being simply decorative,” she says.

Tiffany T is made of 18 karat gold (rose, yellow and white) and sterling silver.

Amfitheatrof took the letter T to translate into the collection that includes bracelets, chains of varied lengths and elegant pendants, as well as rings and earrings.

The collection is strong and graphic, with angular sides that speak of strength and courage.

Like its Atlas collection, which features Roman numerals, Tiffany T will appeal to customers who love clean and sleek lines.

Amfitheatrof also incorporated white and stark black ceramic into some of the pieces. A number of diamond pieces are inspired by

Tiffany’s archival sketches from the 1920s.

“The drawings showed diamonds set in a refined way that makes them feel immediately contemporary, and so they seem like a natural fit for the spirit of this collection.”
