RM7.63mil unpaid summonses by foreign-registered vehicles

KUALA LUMPUR: The Trafik COPS online payment system is set to undergo an RM30 million upgrade, including an Automatic Number Plate Registration (ANPR) system to identify foreign cars with outstanding summonses.

Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Khalid Shariff said the move was part of measures to recover some RM7.63 million in unpaid summonses issued to foreign-registered vehicles.

"The ANPR system will be rolled out next year at the country's entry points, so that we can immediately identify those cars that have been entered into the Trafik COPS system," he said during a media townhall session on the 2013 Auditor-General's report.

The third series of the report, released last Monday, revealed that 121,664 traffic summonses had been issued to foreigners between 2011 and 2013.

Singapore topped the list with 84,604 unsettled summonses, followed by Brunei with 25,803, the report said.
