New births at Taiping Zoo

TAIPING: The Taiping Zoo and Night Safari has a new attraction which is a baby chimpanzee which was born on Sept 16.

This is the fourth offspring of a female chimpanzee from Australia. The baby was revealed to the media during a briefing here.

Taiping Municipal Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff said the zoo already had five chimpanzees.

“We have yet to name the baby chimpanzee which was from the Litoko and Melisa genes of Switzerland and Australia,” he said, adding that the genes had produced three chimpanzees now aged 4, 5 and 10 years.

The zoo also welcomed the birth of Keria Mahkota baby birds.

Rahim said this was the first time the species had given birth at the zoo.

“A Keria Mahkota bird gave birth to two baby birds.

“The birds have a lifespan of 25 years.”

The Keria Mahkota bird species was acquired by the zoo in addition to the Landak Raya, Landak Nibung and Burung Botak Upeh species, said Rahim.

“We hope more visitors will come and visit the various species of birds and animals that we have here,” he added. By Sylvia Looi
