Woman gets 1-day jail for stealing curtains, cushions

KUALA LUMPUR: A 56-year old woman was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM1,000 by the magistrate's court for stealing curtains and cushion covers at a hypermarket yesterday.

Hamsiah Ahmad pleaded guilty to stealing a set of curtain and two sets of cushion covers worth RM617 at the Aeon hypermarket Section 1, Wangsa Maju here about 9pm on Nov 16.

Counsel Zulkifli Awang who represented Hamsiah mitigated for a minimum sentence saying that his client and her 62-year old husband were both unemployed and dependent on their two children.

In sentencing, magistrate Zuraini Abdul Razak said the accused should not commit such an offence even if a small amount was involved.

"At this age, you are not supposed to do this. It is still an offence," she said.

Zuraini also ordered for Hamsiah to serve two months in jail if she fails to pay the fine.

Meanwhile in the same court, an unemployed man claimed trial to hurting his sister on Wednesday.

Mohd Hafiz Abdul Rahman, 28, was accused of causing hurt to Norazrina Abdul Rahman, 39, by hitting her with a wooden belt causing injuries on her head and face.

He allegedly committed the offence in a house at Alam Damai Cheras, here at 10am on Nov 13.

The accused pleaded for a minimum bail as he has an 11-month old child and is taking care of his father who had a stroke.

He added that his wife recently died in an accident and that he was currently going through a hard time.

He said that if he was in prison, no one can look after his father and child, adding that he might not be able to survive in jail with his condition now.

Zuraini then granted RM2,500 bail with one surety and fixed Dec 17 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Najwa Bistamam prosecuted for both cases while Mohd Hafiz was unrepresented.
