China arrests 39 in scam targeting Malaysians

BEIJING: Police have arrested 39 people as they broke up a telephone scam ring in southern China that tricked Malaysians into wiring them money, state media reported today.

Police also confiscated ill-gotten and other funds worth more than 60 million yuan (US$10 million) in southern Guangdong province, according to the official Xinhua News Agency, which cited an unnamed police spokesman in Zhuhai city. It said the ring was led by two Taiwanese men and most of the other members were Malaysians.

Xinhua said that starting in 2012, the gang operated offices in four cities in Guangdong and Hunan provinces and phoned people pretending to be customer service staff from Malaysian banks telling them their accounts had been compromised. --AFP
