Cycling for palliative care

KUALA LUMPUR: The inaugural Ride for Palliative Care event on Nov 30 will see people cycling to raise awareness of palliative care near the Palace of Justice, Putrajaya.

Organised by Hasmah Ibrahim, a patient receiving palliative care and her husband, Saharuddin, the couple aims to spread awareness of palliative care and its benefits.

Before being diagnosed with lymphoma three years ago, Hasmah ran a cleaning business while assisting Saharuddin to organise cycling events. Hasmah is under palliative care for almost two years at Hospis Malaysia.

Palliative care is a medical sub-specialty for people with serious illness. Its multi-disciplinary approach focuses on providing relief from its symptoms, its pain and stress to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

“We came up with the cycling event to benefit other patients and when we shared the idea with Hospis Malaysia, they agreed to co-organise it with us.

“We hope to get support from various groups to make the event a memorable one,” said Hasmah.

An inspired Saharuddin said: “My wife has shown me that as long as you breathe and move, you can still contribute to the people around you.”

The event would have lucky draws and the couple is trying to get sponsors for it.

Participation fee for the event is RM30 per person. Children can join the fun for free.

All proceeds will be channelled to Hospis Malaysia.
