Stunner from Jing Yi

TEE Jing Yi (pic) scored the biggest win of her career after stunning China’s Wang Yihan in the second round of the Hong Kong Open yesterday.

Jing Yi, who had never beaten a top 10 player before, needed 51 minutes to send the World No 3 packing with a 21-19, 14-21, 21-15 score.

“To me, anything can happen in a match because I believe everybody has a 50-50 chance. I need to play my game right and something special like today (yesterday) will happen,” said Jing Yi, who will take on reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the quarter-finals today.

“My attack is strong, and coach Rashid (Sidek) has been advising me here. I will fight till the end against Carolina.”

It was, however, the end of the road for all the other Malaysian shuttlers who failed to get past the second round.

Men’s singles Chong Wei Feng lost 21-18, 15-21, 22-20 to Japan’s Takuma Ueda, while women’s singles Lydia Cheah Li Ya went down 21-10, 21-10 to Carolina Marin.

Women’s doubles Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean were defeated 19-21, 21-16, 21-9 by China’s Bao Yixin-Wang Xiaoli. By Fabian Peter
