GEORGE TOWNTHE public toilet at the Air Itam wet market is no ordinary public amenity. Despite being part of a popular wet market which serves more than 100,000 residents in one of the most densely populated constituencies here, the public toilet and its facilities have remained clean.
Penang Island Municipal Council cleaner K. Ambalagan, 57, and his team are responsible for the toilet being named the cleanest public toilet in the state.
The toilet has also been ranked No 1 in the state for three consecutive years.
The building is painted in soothing blue hues and decorated with pictures.
There is also a little garden with ornamental plants.
There are air fresheners inside and outside the toilet to ensure it always smells fragrant.
Ambalagan attributed the toilet’s success to his team members’ dedication to their job.
“It has been worth all the effort. The win has given me and my team the motivation to always keep the toilet clean,” he said after receiving a certificate and plaque for their third win from Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hong Wai recently.
