High charges force fishermen to quit

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman wants Sabah Fisheries Marketing Authority (SAFMA) to investigate claims on the alleged high charges imposed on fish boat owners that lead them to cease operations.

Kota Kinabalu Fishing Boat Owners Association chairman Simon Hong said more than 100 fishing boats had stopped going to sea since last Thursday due to high charges imposed by the private company, appointed SAFMA.

This will cause significant drop in fish supplies as normally members were able to yield 500-tonne of catch daily on peak season and 100 tonnes during non-peak season.

Musa said they must find a solution because if this was allowed to drag on, the public would also be greatly affected by exorbitant fish prices.
