Altera looks to boost patents

GEORGE TOWN: Leading semiconductor company Altera Corporation (M) Bhd aims to increase its number of patents by 50 per cent to up to 50 next year.

Its managing director and vice-president Asia Pacific region, Datuk Dr Mohd Sofi Osman, said the multinational corporation had enough cutting edge technology to boost its 33 patents granted this year.

“We have tapped into our pool of talents from the electronic and electric sector.

“The skilled manpower enables us to churn out more patents,” he said at the company’s office in Bayan Lepas Technoplex here recently.

Sofi said the company, since its inception in 1994, had accumulated 167 patents issued to-date by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Earlier, Sofi had officiated the opening ceremony of Altera Innovation Day in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Altera Penang.

Eleven exhibitors set up the booths outside the Altera Penang auditorium.

He added that the company had focused on research and development, with Penang housing 40 per cent of its global employee headcount at 1,200 workers.
