Look East Policy with S. Korea to enter next phase

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Look East Policy with South Korea will enter the next phase with the two countries now looking to further strengthening their ties with the focus on the trade, investment and high-technology cooperation.

Prime Minister's Special Envoy to East Asia, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said the first wave started in 1980's when the country looked to Japan and South Korea for inspiration and the cooperation focused on training and capacity building which greatly benefited the country.

"Now we are continuing to explore and extend our cooperation in more high-technological sectors and high-value investments, particularly in green technology, information and communication technology and biotechnology," he said.

Tiong said this to reporters on the sidelines of the seminar, 'Furthering The Look East Policy With Industrial Cooperation between Malaysia, Korea and Asean' here today.

Meanwhile, South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Cho ByungJae, said under the 'Look East' Policy, Malaysia learned alot from the successes of Japan and South Korea.

He said as Malaysia moved towards becoming high-income nation and a more knowledged-intensive economy, the businesses must innovate to create an impact on the national economy.

Cho said the partnership would not only enhance cooperation but also played an instrumental role in furthering Asean-South Korea partnership as Malaysia would take over Asean chairmanship next year,-- Bernama
