KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to have separate bills for solid waste management and quit rent as part of an effort to improve solid waste management system in the country, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said today.
He said the ministry would discuss with the state governments and local authorities (PBT) to get their views and suggestions on the matter.
“If there are separate bills for solid waste management and quit rent, the revenue from the bill collection will be used specifically to manage solid waste in an organised and effective manner,” he told media conference after visiting the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (PPSPPA) booth at the Putra World Trade Centre here today.
Currently, he said, the bill for solid waste management was collected together with the quit rent to pay for maintenance cost, like for garbage collection, cleaning of drains, landscaping and beautification, payment of electricity bill for street lighting and maintenance of traffic lights.
“A study on having separate bills has been done to determine the allocation needed by PBT to manage solid wastes, and if this (separate bills) is finalised, the quit rent will be reduced,” he added.
However, he said, the success of solid waste management would depend on the public in practicing the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle).--BERNAMA
