LABUAN: The Labuan Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council (MAIWP) has disbursed RM5.38 million in tithes since 2005 to the poor, said manager Ahmad Tarmizi Yahaya.

He said the financial aid was disbursed for house construction (RM2.89 million), house repair (RM1.85 million) and house rental (RM906,000).

The housing scheme assistance would also zero in on the homeless on the island, he told Bernama.

Between January and October this year, MAIWP Labuan approved a total of RM920,246, involving 23 applications for house construction (RM479,270), 34 applications for house repair (RM184,717) and 109 applications for house rental (RM256,259), he said.

He said MAIWP Labuan welcomed applications from permanent residents who had been categorised as poor and eligible for similar assistance.

Ahmad Tarmizi said Labuan recorded the highest amount of disbursement of tithes for the house construction assistance scheme after Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom had said that a total of RM19.25 million of tithes had been disbursed to the poor in the federal territories under the house construction assistance scheme.
