Jewellery shop loses RM100,000 to masked robbers

BAGAN SERAI: A jeweller shop owner suffered some RM100,000 losses after being robbed by a group of mask men, who were armed with a pistol and hammers.

In the 5.15pm incident at Parit Buntar here on Sunday, the robbery was over within 30 seconds where the robbers managed to scoop three trays of jewelleries.

The suspects getaway car - a Proton Waja - was later found abandoned and torched at Taman Harapan Sungai Acheh in Penang at 7pm.

District police chief Superintendent Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said at the time of incident, the shop owner and his three employees were busy serving five customers.

"Suddenly four suspects rushed into the shop and one of them pointed a pistol at the victims causing them to run helter skelter," he said, adding that other suspects, who were armed with hammers, proceeded to smash the display glass.

"This caused the shop's alarm system to be triggered and the auto door to come down. However, one of the suspects managed to push one chair to stop the door from closing completely allowing them to escape," he added.

Investigations showed the getaway car was reported stolen at Jinjang, Kuala Lumpur on June 14.

Omar Bakhtiar said an eyewitness claimed the suspects escaped in a Nissan Frontier, driven by another suspect, at Penang.

"We believed the pistol used by the suspect was a toy pistol," he said, adding that this was the second incident of robbery suffered by the owner.

"Its first experience of being robbed was when it was operating at Pekan Lama Parit Buntar," he added.
