Green initiative to create sustainable environment

JOHOR BARU: THE Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) will be organising vehicle emission-free programmes every month from next month to realise its aim of becoming a world-class city by 2020.

Johor Baru mayor Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamed Dewam said it was one way to raise awareness of a clean and healthy environment.

He said the council was planning various activities for the programmes. They would take place for three hours, from 8am to 11am each time.

During the event, vehicles will not be allowed in the venue, which will, show the public the importance of keeping the environment clean.

“We have organised similar initiatives before and will intensify the programmes and introduce them to other parts of the city,” said Rahman after the launch of the JB Think Green — Making JB Alive programme by state Tourism and Domestic Trade and Consumerism executive committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong.

Also present were Iskandar Malaysia Development Authority chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Johor Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation director Asri Amat and Johor Youth Club chairman Johan Arifin Mohd Ropi.

Rahman said the vehicle emission-free programmes had received the cooperation of the police and MBJB enforcement officers who would be controlling traffic to ensure public safety.

On the “JB Think Green” programme, Rahman said it was part of the council’s effort to create a sustainable environment and not only focused on cleaning up.
