Debutantes get together for a good cause

GEORGE TOWN: NINE young bachelorettes from elite families waltzed their hearts out at the inaugural Governor Ball, here, recently.

Dressed in exquisite white ball gowns and lace gloves, they celebrated an age-old tradition where young ladies were introduced to the aristocratic society at a ball, escorted by eligible bachelors, clad in tuxedos and bow-ties.

The tradition stems from the time of Queen Charlotte of England.

The ball, first of its kind in Penang, was organised by the Debutante Council Malaysia to raise funds for the Governor Education Fund and Penang Hospice Society.

Debutante Council Malaysia treasurer K.H. Chan said the event was organised to raise awareness among debutantes of the need to give something back to society.

"The fund will help deserving children in the state to get a good education and help the Hospice Society to expand,” he said.

Guest-of-honour Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and Penang Hospice Society vice- chairman Datuk Seri Dr. T. Devaraj received a mock cheque of RM50,000.
