USM theatre dept to stage Hamlet

GEORGE TOWN: The play ‘Hamlet’, using elements of Malay dark magic, will be staged by the Department of Drama and Theatre of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for the first time at the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (Penangpac).

The show will start on Friday at 8.30pm; Saturday at 3pm and 8.30pm; and Sunday at 11am and 5pm.

‘The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark’, or ‘Hamlet’ for short, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, is one of his popular works.

‘Hamlet’, a story of jealousy, ambition and revenge, had inspired social historians, dramatists, humanists and theatre lovers for centuries.

The production is unique, using a three-dimensional traverse stage while incorporating sounds from traditional musical instruments, elements of Malay ‘poisons and charms’ as well as the interpretations of the Malay psyche.

Directed by Dr A.S. Hardy, the play features Raqib Karim, Samuel Low, Julia Claire Holloway and Tan Seoh Chen.

Tickets are priced at RM38 and RM25 (students, the disabled and senior citizens).

Tickets can be bought online at www.ticketpro.com.my or by calling Penangpac at 04-–899 1722 or 04-899 2722. By Jennifer Tham
