Badminton: Malaysians sails through Australia Open

Sydney : MOHAMAD Arif Abdul Latif, checked himself into the main draw of the Australia Open, after winning both of his matches in the men's singles qualification round today.

The former BA of Malaysia (BAM) shuttler, was barely troubled as he defeated Australia's Mitchell Wheller 21-11, 21-8 in the first match, before recording a 21-17, 22-20 win over England's Andrew Smith in the second match.

"Today's matches were not really hard. My aim is to better my world rankings this year.

"I did not play in as many tournaments last year, so I'm hoping to improve on that this year," said Arif who will take on third seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in the first round tomorrow.

Another professional shuttler Jiann Shiarng Chiang, also advanced to the main draw, and will take on Taiwan's Hsu Jen Hao tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the scratch pairing of Lim Khim Wah-Ow Yao Han, also came good in the men's doubles qualifying round.

The Malaysian duo, needed only 19 minutes to send Australians Oon Hoe Keat-Tran Hoang Pham packing with a 21-14, 21-7 score.

Khim Wah-Yao Han will face Philip Joper Escueta-Ronel Estanislao from the Philippines tomorrow.
