Floods: Fewer evacuees in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The numbers of evacuees decreased in six districts as the flood situation improved with no rain fall recorded this morning.

State Health and Women Development, Family and Community committee chairman Mohd Pehimi Yusof said as at 3pm today, a total of 28,561 victims were seeking shelter at 116 evacuation centres compared to 28,728 people at 123 relief centres in the morning.

Pehimi said Setiu closed their relief centres this morning as the flood had totally receded.

In Kemaman, the district recorded the highest number of victim with 19,405 people evacuated to 53 relief centres.

In Dungun, 6,285 people were placed at 33 centres while in Kuala Terengganu, 1,612 people remained at 12 relief centres.

In Besut, 490 people were moved to five relief centres and in Hulu Terengganu, 11 centres were utilised to house 654 people.

Pehimi said State Welfare Department is making an arrangement to send food supplies and medicine via helicopter to victims at Pulau Perhentian this evening.
