Floods: Najib returns to oversee operations

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will return to Malaysia from the United States to oversee the emergency response to the worsening floods in the east coast states.

A government spokesman said Najib had decided to return from the United States to oversee the emergency response to the floods, and will land in Kelantan on Saturday.

“During his time abroad, the Prime Minister received daily updates on the situation, and spoke to the Deputy Prime Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) to instruct the National Disaster Management and Relief Committee to step up their efforts to assist those affected by the floods.

“Following recent reports that the situation had continued to worsen, the Prime Minister felt it was necessary to return to personally oversee the response,” said the spokesman.

Najib will chair a meeting and will be briefed by the National Security Council, the National Disaster Management and Relief Committee, the state government and local emergency responders.

He would also be meeting victims affected by the flood and discuss new measures to support those who have been misplaced by the worsening floods.

Some 118,896 people have been affected by the floods in Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang and Perlis.
