Owners of 5 illegal taxis wanted

JOHOR BARU: THE Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is looking for owners of five private cars which were used as illegal luxury taxis with the smartphone application Uber.

Undercover SPAD enforcement officers detected the vehicles taking passengers to Legoland, Senai International Airport and Pasir Gudang during the recent Op Revus tegas.

  The two Toyota Camry, a Nissan Sylphy, Nissan Sentra and Kia Optima cars were driven by men aged between 23 and 28.

The men were detained and had their statements taken before being were released. The vehicles were seized and taken to the Bandar Dato’ Onn police station for investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 16(5) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 pertaining to the use of private vehicles for public transport without proper licence.

SPAD enforcement division general manager Datuk Che Hasni Che Ahmad said the operation was the second to be carried out after the one in Kuala Lumpur in October.

He said there were now 18 cases involving the use of Uber.

“We carried out investigations after receiving tip-offs from the public in Johor and Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
