Hundreds flock to Surabaya airport

JAKARTA: Hundreds of Indonesians descended on Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, yesterday hoping for news on the missing Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501.

A 45-year-old woman said she had six family members on the plane, which lost contact with air traffic controllers less than an hour after taking off from Surabaya yesterday.

“They were going to Singapore for a holiday. They have always flown with AirAsia and there was no problem. I am shocked to hear the news and I am very worried that the plane might have crashed.”

Dozens of relatives sat in a room at the airport, with many of them seen talking on mobile phones and crying. As word spread, more family members came to the crisis centre.

A man named Purnomo told TVOne in Surabaya of his “lucky escape”.

“I should have been on the flight.

“We, seven people, had planned to go to Singapore for vacation, but this morning, I had an emergency. I had my passport in hand.” Agencies
