Hungarian Govt to re-open embassy in Malaysia

KUCHING: The state government was told that the Hungarian Government will re-open its embassy in Malaysia, which was closed six years ago due to economic crisis.

The matter was related via a courtesy call by Hungarian National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, Zsolt Nemeth to State Tourism and Housing Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg at the latter's office in Petra Jaya, near here today.

Abang Johari told reporters that the Hungarian Government would be re-opening its mission's office in Kuala Lumpur in March.

"The re-opening of the embassy office by the Hungarian government will help the further strengthen bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and Hungary in many sectors especially education development.

"During the meeting (with delegates from Hungary), we have discovered several areas in the education industry that could benefit both nations in the short and long run.

"This included scholarship by the Hungarian government's Education Ministry for Malaysian students to further studies in Degree and Post-Master Degree in certain discipline.

"Their major is Science therefore only selected students, who are eligible to take the Undergraduate and Post-Master Degree level, and passed in English and Germany proficiency, will be given the scholarship to study in Hungary,” he told reporters.

He said this after receiving a courtesy call from Nemeth and his entourage from the Hungarian government at Wisma Sultan Tengah here.

Abang Johari also said Education Ministries from both countries were in the midst of discussion on the scholarship to be given to selected students.

“We have yet to know the release date of the scholarship to the students as they are still discussing over the matter,” Johari added.

Johari said the visit is also to create closer bond and collaboration between Hungary and the State Government.

Earlier, the Hungarian government's entourage had paid a coutersy visit to Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Asfia Awang Nassar at the Legislative Assembly Complex Petra Jaya here.

The delegates were then being toured around the complex after the courtesy call, which took about two hours. It was their first time visit to the state.
