Malnourished girl kept captive since November

BUTTERWORTH: The seven-year-old emaciated girl, who was found last week locked alone in a dark house, has been in solitary confinement since November, North Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said.

Abdul Rahman said based on their investigation it was also believed that the girl has been locked in the flat at Sungai Dua here with no electricity and water for the last two months.

"We believe her father and stepmother only gave her food and water once in awhile," he said after visiting the girl, who has been warded at the Seberang Perai Hospital here since she was rescued on Thursday.

It was reported that police on a routine check on the Year One pupil, after her teacher lodged a complaint that the girl has been absent for days, were stunned to find the girl malnourished and alone in the flat.

It was reported that the girl was left alone in the house by her parents, who lived in a unit opposite the unit she was locked in.

The girl’s father, a 34-year-old pump attendant, has been remanded for four days to facilitate investigation.

The girl is presently placed under protective care under the Welfare Department.
