Resolve MIC crisis fast, urges Kamalanathan

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC central working committee member (CWC) P. Kamalanathan has urged the party leadership to resolve the crisis facing the party.

He asked the party president Datuk Seri G Palanivel to hold an emergency CWC meeting to resolve party issues, following the directive by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for MIC to hold fresh elections for the party's CWC and vice-president posts within 90 days.

"I am appealing to the party president to immediately stop all unilateral decisions made by him for the sake of the party and the Indian community,” he said last night.

Kamalanathan who is also the deputy education minister urged the party president to adhere to the decision made collectively at the CWC meeting on Dec 18.

"The meeting also agreed to form a special committee consisting the president, deputy president, and five members each from the disputing factions to resolve the issues brought up.

"Unfortunately, all the above promises by the president were not kept and he went on to make decisions that were detrimental to the party and created further rift between thee factions. This is totally unacceptable," he said.

He also suggested for the party to conduct a fresh election on all of its leadership post to preserve its democratic practise and solve the present party crisis.

The crisis began brewing on Dec 5, when the RoS ordered MIC to hold fresh elections for the party's 23 CWC members and three vice-president's post within 90 days following alleged irregularities and breach of the party's constitution and the Societies Act.

ROS also advised MIC against holding its annual general meeting until the issue was settled.
