NMIT college to introduce more maritime courses in future to meet demand

JOHOR BARU: As there is growing demand for maritime expertise, the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) college will be introducing several maritime courses in future.

The college which specialises in maritime education, training and consultancy services has been offering diploma courses in maritime studies namely diplomas in Maritime Transportation Management, Shipping Management, and Port Management since its open its door for enrollment in 2010.

NMIT founder Captain Razali Yaacob said as the maritime field requires both specialised work skills as well as academic knowledge, the college is adding more courses to meet the current demand from the industry in producing ready to work graduates from most maritime related fields.

“We believe that our courses will meet to demands in the maritime industry as well as producing apt and trained workers to be immediately placed in the maritime working sectors,” he said when met recently.

Razali said those going for their diplomas in NMIT will only need to finish the courses for only two and a half years.

The student intakes would be in January, May and September every year.

“At the moment we have almost 1,000 students pursuing their diploma studies here. We are ready to accept more enrollment as our main campus in Educity in Nusajaya is able to accommodate up to 3,000 students yearly,” he said.

NMIT president Professor Malek Pourzanjani said the new diploma courses which is in the pipeline will consist of Maritime Law, Offshore Maritime Operations, Maritime Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Management, Logistic, Maritime Entrepreneurship, Naval Architecture, Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering.

“We have submitted an application to the Ministry of Education for the Maritime Law and Offshore Maritime Operation diploma studies which should start by next year. The remaining courses will be added progressively," he said.

The college recently held its first convocation in Johor Baru where 42 students graduated with flying colours.

The college also had strengthen its platform as a leading global maritime college in the southern region through its collaboration with some of the highest ranking and world renowned maritime institutions for its graduates to further their studies to bachelors degree or postgraduate levels.

Professor Malek said those going to NMIT will be able to continue their studies to either Southampton Solent University in United Kingdom, Australian Maritime College in Australia, Maritiem Instituut Willem Barentsz in the Netherlands or any maritime higher learning institutions of their choice.
