MMEA seize trawler in restricted fishing area

LABUAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here has seized a fishing trawler for allegedly trespassing a fishing zone.

A team of enforcement officers intercepted the Malaysian-registered trawler about 2.5 nautical miles off the Beting Jahat waters near Kuala Penyu, about 6pm yesterday.

The seizure was made under ‘Ops Sejahtera’.

MMEA enforcement chief, Capt Che Adnan Md Isa said three foreign crew members and the skipper, aged between 20 and 38, were detained for questioning for encroaching into ‘Zone A’ of the fishing area.

He said the trawler was currently docked at the MMEA jetty for investigations under the Fisheries Act 1985.– BERNAMA
