Over 21,000 dengue cases recorded since Jan: Subra

PUTRAJAYA: The dengue cases in Malaysia continue to rise, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

Based on the ministry's report, a total of 21,310 cases were recorded since Jan compared to 13,915 cases recorded during the same period last year.

"This spike shows an increase of 53 per cent or 7,395 cases.

"Selangor recorded 58 per cent of the whole total. While for the same period, about 54 deaths were reported compare to 25 deaths recorded for the same period last year, which is an increase of 116 per cent,” he said at a press conference held at the ministry here, today.

Dr Subramaniam said this month itself, from Feb 15 until Feb 21, a total of 2,959 dengue case has been reported, compared to 3,312 cases which was recorded last week.

"It is a decrease of 12 per cent, probably due to the long public holidays," he said.

Dr Subramaniam said to combat the rise of dengue cases in Selangor, the ministry had launched Ops Gempur Aedes on Feb 10 until Feb 25 which focused on construction sites. A total of 52 sites were identified as dengue breeding grounds.
