Nationwide price-reduction campaign begins today

KUANTAN: The price-reduction campaign nationwide will proceed as scheduled from today despite the hike in fuel prices, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek.

He said the campaign would involve more than 1,000 supermarket branches nationwide, which offer more than 82,000 products with discounts from 10 to 70 per cent.

"This campaign is among the government's initiatives to help ease the people's burden, especially those from the low and middle-income groups," he said when launching the campaign at The Store supermarket here today.

He said at least 16 supermarket operators had agreed to join the campaign and would make the special offer between one and four months.

Meanwhile in Alor Star, the state Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry encouraged traders at the farmers' markets (pasar tani) and night markets in the state to join in the price-reduction campaign.

State Industry and Investment, Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism committee chairman Datuk Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail said it was advisable for the traders to participate in the campaign to ease the burden of consumers.

“It is not necessary for the traders to give a discount between 10 to 70 per cent of the good items, but a discount on several item would be good.

“This is to show that the traders are supporting the price-reduction campaign which being is carried out nationwide,” he said in a press conference after launching the state-level price-reduction campaign at AEON Big supermarket here today.

He added that the campaign would involve about 20 supermarket branches in the state.
