PUTRAJAYA: Deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today held a meeting with the president of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Prof Dr Pham Vu Luan here.

Also present at the hour-long meeting with Muhyiddin, who is also the Malaysian Education Minister, was SEAMEO Secretariat director, Dr Witaya Jeradechakul, where matters discussed included the present and past SEAMEO programs and activities.

Vu Luan, who is also Vietnam’s Education and Training Minister, is on a four-day visit to Malaysia beginning yesterday.

The working visit to Malaysia is part of the program normally carried out by the SEAMEO president to all member countries of the organisation.

It aims to strengthen ties between member countries and the organisation besides monitoring the implementation of decisions made by the SEAMEO Council concerning the programs and their annual activities.

Vu Luan’s visit to Malaysia could also boost the image of the country among SEAMEO member nations and the world generally in line with the government policy to transform Malaysia into a centre of excellence in the field of education in the region.

Malaysia became a member of SEAMEO since it was first established in 1965 which aimed to encourage cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture among South-east Asian nations.--BERNAMA
