DPM congratulates students on STPM performance

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today he was pleased with the achievement of students in last year’s Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM).

He said the 2014 STPM examinations showed an increase not only in the number of students achieving full pass rate but also on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which increased from 2.57 in 2013 to 2.62 last year.

“Congratulations to the 41,915 students who scored full passes in the 2014 STPM, in particular to the 408 students who garnered an ‘A’ in all subjects,” he said in a statement.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said he is confident that family members, teachers and society were also equally proud with the students’ achievements.

He said family encouragement was an essential part in propelling the students toward their achievement.

“The excellence registered by the students is in part due to the sweat and effort of their families and teachers,” he said.

Muhyiddin said the achievement also showed that the ministry’s National Education Development Plan, in particular measures that strengthen the Form Six education, had also indirectly enhanced teachers and students performance towards achieving excellence.

“The changes in the STPM assessment also played a role as a catalyst towards the ability of students to increase their respective school’s performance, which in turn contributed to the students’ excellence,” he said.

Muhyiddin said the results also showed that the achievement gap between rural and urban students had also narrowed.

“This is an indication that the expansion and effectiveness of the education system as well as the policy practiced by the Education Ministry was successful in providing educational opportunities to all levels of society,” he added.

Muhyiddin reminded students and schools that their achievement is an incentive from their efforts and an encouragement for others to strive for their own success.

“To those who were less successful, do not give up. I believe that if we continue to strive and improve ourselves, InsyaAllah we will succeed,” Muhyiddin said.
