DPM praises national athletes for winning ASEAN Schools Games

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has lauded the national athletes of the sixth ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) 2014 for emerging as overall champions at the regional sports event last year.

Muhyiddin said Malaysians should be proud of their success in garnering 105 medals in total, of which consisted 41 gold, 34 silver, and 30 bronze medals at Marikina, Philippines in November last year.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, praised the national team for beating neighbours Thailand and Indonesia who took second and third place, respectively.

“The development of sports that was implemented at the district and state levels had created many student athletes who have done us proud,” he said during his speech at the Education Ministry's Sports Awards 2014 in the Pullman Hotel, here, this afternoon.

Some 12 awards were handed out as incentives and recognition to the teenage athletes and educators at the event, which was jointly organised by the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) and Nestle Products Sdn Bhd.

National prodigy swimmers Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Welson Sim Wee Sheng, from the Bukit Jalil Sports School, were awarded the special Puteri and Putera awards, respectively, for their outstanding achievements in the aquatic field.
