Bursa Malaysia closes higher

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended higher today on continued buying in selective heavyweights, as bargain hunters emerged after yesterday’s losses, dealers said.

As at 5pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 4.12 points to close at 1,821.25, after moving between 1,817.94 and 1,825.79 throughout the day.

Maybank and Maxis were the top gainers among the blue chips, rising 15 sen and nine sen each to RM9.35 and RM7.07 respectively, representing 3.62 points of the total benchmark index.

On the broader market, losers outpaced gainers 461 to 420 with 282 counters unchanged, 591 counters untraded and 11 others suspended. Total volume rose to 2.83 billion shares worth RM2.35 billion from 2.25 billion shares worth RM2.19 billion on Monday.

The FBM Emas Index added 13.17 points to 12,518, the FBMT100 Index advanced 15.65 points to 12,203.38 and the FBM Ace jumped 110.25 points to 6,739.70.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index was 7.22 points easier at 13,065.03, while the FBM 70 dropped 28.92 points to 13,453.58.

On a sectoral basis, the Industrial Index gained 8.40 points to 3,311.18, the Plantation Index improved 10.95 points to 7,973.57, while the Finance Index jumped 71.16 points to 16,101.18.

Of the actively-traded stocks, Privasia and Asia Bioenergy earned half-a-sen each to 21 sen and 11.5 sen respectively, while Sanichi and Nexgram rose one sen each to 10.5 sen and 11.5 sen.

Among heavyweights, TNB and Axiata were flat at RM14.66 and RM7.10 respectively, Public Bank added one sen to RM18.60, while Sime Darby lost six sen to RM9.32.

The Main Market volume rose to 1.35 billion units worth RM2.10 billion from 1.31 billion units worth RM2.04 billion on Monday. Turnover on the ACE Market surged to 1.35 billion shares valued at RM222.39 million from 838.88 million shares valued at RM140.64 million previously. Warrants advanced to 121.90 million units worth RM21.10 million from 97.84 million units worth RM17.85 million on Monday.

Consumer products accounted for 131.17 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (221.48 million), construction (163.31 million), trade and services (464.64 million), technology (83.86 million), infrastructure (15.77 million), SPAC (12.47 million), finance (118.53 million), hotels (2.57 million), properties (113.79 million), plantations (15.07 million), mining (6,900), REITs (9.57 million) and closed/fund (6,800). -- BERNAMA
