Dengue cases spike 197pc in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: There were 1,115 dengue cases reported in the first eight weeks of the year with two fatalities in the state, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Exco chairman Dr Afif Bahardin.

“Penang recorded a 197 per cent spike in dengue cases from January to Feb 28 this year, compared with the same period last year.

“There are currently 15 localities where dengue had been reported with two localities having the highest dengue cases, namely in Perkampungan Valdor (25) and Jalan Batas Ban (17) in the Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) district here,” he said in a statement today.

The other localities are Cangkat Tembaga, Jalan Lim Lean Teng, Jalan Samak, Jalan Siam, Lengkok Dumbar, Solok Dunlop, Taman Kristal Apartment and Taman Manggis in the northeast district and Flat Sri Bayu, Lorong Rajawali, Bandar Baru Teluk Kumbar, Kampung Matahari Naik in the southwest district.

On the mainland, there are two localities in the Seberang Perai Utara district (Bagan Ajam and Lintang Mak Mandin), one in Seberang Perai Tengah district (Perda Apartment Permata) and the remaining two in the SPS district (Jalan Batas Ban and Perkampungan Valdor).

Afif advised the public not to neglect their responsibilities, particularly in maintaining cleanliness, use mosquito repellent and wear appropriate clothes, especially when outdoors.
