PUTRAJAYA: The government is committed to its agenda in building affordable housing for the people, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this morning.
He said the commitment was evident with today's launching of the first batch of 1Malaysia People's Housing Project (PR1MA) homes in Presint 1, where owners of some 560 units received mock keys to their new homes.
Najib said the government had also allocated RM1.3 billion during the Budget 2015 to achieve its target of building at least 80,000 affordable homes nationwide.
"The public must understand that the homes will take time to be completed, but what is most important is our agenda will be achieved not long from now," he said during the special key handing over ceremony.
Najib said he hoped all projects would run smoothly, adding they were put under a 'balloting' system that was audited by KPMG so that the issue of integrity of selecting owners among applicants did not arise.
In highlighting its popularity, Najib said the number of applicants for government affordable housing projects were seven times the number of units available.
This was because projects such as the one in Presint 11, could be bought for RM 120,000 for a 815 square foot unit while a 1,000 square foot unit cost about RM150,000. Both types of units, he said, were sold at 30 percent lower than the market prices offered elsewhere.
