Villagers stumble upon World War 2 bomb

KUANTAN: Settlers at Felda Bukit Goh here had a rude shock when they stumbled upon an active bomb at an oil palm plantation on Thursday afternoon.

Some settlers, who were walking to their smallholding, spotted the abandoned rusty World War II bomb about 12.30pm and immediately alerted the police for assistance.

Upon realising the bomb was still active, policemen cordoned-off the area and instructed residents nearby to evacuate the scene as a precautionary measure.

Members from the district police's bomb disposal unit took some 20 minutes to detonate the bombs before searching the nearby areas to check if there were other similar bombs.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Aziz Salleh said once the site was declared safe, the settlers were allowed to resume their activities.

The active aerial bomb, measuring a meter in length, 90cm in width and weighing 226kg, is believed to have been dropped by a plane during the war.
