UPDATED: Thousands homeless in Kg Bangau Bangau fire

SEMPORNA: A total of 241 heads of household have registered with the district fire and rescue department after their homes were razed at Kampung Bangau-Bangau, early morning.

Its chief Fazizul Hizam Borhan when contacted said no casualties were reported, adding villagers sustained only minor injuries.

“We are not sure how many villagers were affected but as of 2pm, there were 241 heads of household in our list.

"Our investigation team is now looking into the cause of fire,” he said.

In the 2am incident, most villagers were sound asleep.

Two fire engines with 12 personnel were dispatched to put out the fire after receiving a distress call at 2.02am. The team was also assisted by Tawau fire and rescue team to control the fire that spread on an areas about 4ha.

"We had draw water from the sea using a 'floating pump' by boat to douse the flames," the spokesman said adding so far no casualties were reported.

Thousands are made homeless as fire ravaged about 500 houses at the Kampung Bangau Bangau squatter colony here since the early hours.
