No GST on reading materials

JOHOR BARU: E-papers, fiction and non-fiction books, reference and religious books were among the items that will be exempted from Goods and Services Tax (GST) come April 1.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said there had been some confusions among book publishers and sellers on the GST implementation on the GST zero-rating imposed on the reading materials.

“Yearly about 20,000 books are produced by publishers and to choose which one to be exempted is a big task,” he said.

Chua said the Finance Ministry has decided that only e-books, stationeries, magazines, e-magazines, notepads and exercise note books will be subjected to GST.

“School books such as colouring books for kindergarten or cooking books will not be subjected to GST,” he said after launching the Powerboat race at the Iskandar Waterfront Carnival 2015 at Danga Bay today.
