USM to partner Russian varsity in medical bioscience research

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will soon collaborate with the oldest university in Russian-Asia , the Tomsk State University (TSU) in the field medical bioscience research.

Today, USM and TSU signed a Memorandum of Understanding in biomaterial medical research.

The cooperation will see the two varsities co-develop new-generation dissolvable stitches.

The stitches will have bio-compatible and bio-assimilative qualities to achieve its ‘absorbable’ effect.

TSU would also collaborate with USM on other fields such as chemistry, physics, nanotech, and electrical engineering.

USM acting vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Muhamad Jantan signed the MoU together with TSU international affairs vice-rector Prof Dr. Artem Rykun.

Speaking after the signing, Muhamad said it was proud to be associated with TSU as it was one of the best universities in the world.

“As an Apex university, USM and TSU is a perfect match and we are confident of making sure that the research labours good results,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Rykun said USM and TSU had a common ground in research to get the ground running for collaborative research.

“TSU was formed in 1888 and we are still going through various phases of development.

“By being with USM, there are many similarities and we are impressed by USM’s achievements over the years,” he said.
