Consumers to keep receipts following GST implementation

KOTA KINABALU: Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek advised consumers to keep their receipts following the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) today.

Hasan, who was in the state to inspect goods, expressed satisfaction with prices at major supermarkets but pointed there was confusion pertaining to goods that are supposedly non-taxable.

“There is an order from a telecommunication company to charge 6 per cent on its prepaid mobile reload. I will bring this up to customs authority because as I know, there is already an order not to impose tax.

“I will look at this and bring the case to Kuala Lumpur to resolve it so the public will not get confused.

“What is important now is for consumers to keep their receipts so that they can make a claim later on if it is true such item is non-taxable goods,” he told reporters when met at Citymall Shopping Complex here, at noon.

Hassan also warned traders against profiteering with the implementation of GST, adding consumers can make a complaint to the Ministry through its Anti-Profiteering Operations Centre.
