Terengganu state government to review Sriwijaya Air services

KUALA TERENGGANU: The direct return flight from Kuala Terengganu to Medan service by Sriwijaya Air may be terminated by the state government as it was found to have one way traffic passenger.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the low cost airline started the direct flight package since November last year failed to attract passengers coming in from Medan due to lack of promotions.

"The route is not benefitting the state, there are more passengers travelling from Terengganu as compared to those coming from Medan," Razif said to reporters after the weekly Exco meeting today.

He said the current situation does not support the state’s initiative to promote tourism in Terengganu.

"We are looking at this matter seriously and may terminate the service if we are not benefitting from it," he said.

However, Razif said the state government would do its part to promote its medical tourism in Indonesia with the completion of Kuala Terengganu Specialist Hospital in Kuala Terengganu and the UniSZA Hospital in Gong Badak.

On Nov 24 last year, the direct return flight from Kuala Terengganu to Medan was launched at the Sultan Mahmud Airport aimed at boost tourist numbers coming to Terengganu.

The flight tickets offered are between RM99 to RM300 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
